Proven Results

The endangered Hector’s dolphins are only found in New Zealand’s South Island coastal waters. There are only around 7,000 now, down from 26,000 in the 1970s. They are among the world’s smallest cetaceans and easily recognised by their distinctive dorsal fins.

Under Threat

The biggest threat to Hector’s dolphins are set net and trawl fishing. An estimated 110 to 150 Hectors and Maui’s dolphins die in commercialised set nets every year.
